COGENERATION – TRIGENERATION

Combined Cooling Heat and Power (CCHP, or Trigeneration) involves using a heat engine or a power station to simultaneously generate both electricity and useful heat. The heat produced can be used to drive chillers to provide cooling.

In general, CCHP helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions because waste heat, an inevitable by-product of thermal electricity generating stations, can be used for useful purposes. In addition, transmission and distribution losses – an inevitable consequence of remote electricity generation are minimized.

Local generation of electricity by means of CCHP does have a number of advantages. It would significantly reduce transmission and distribution losses, serving to increase the reliability and ensure security of power supply by the grid and fit the strategic objectives in terms of energy bill saving

A CCHP generally consists of an internal combustion engine attached to an alternator or a gas turbine to increase the high grade thermal energy useful for Ammonia absorption refrigeration chiller running up to – 60 celsius degrees.

AMMONIA ABSORPTION CHILLERS DESIGN

It is not common knowledge that refrigeration down to -60°C (-75°F) from thermal energy is a possible option. The primary variable that drives the economics of ammonia absorption chiller is the electric demand charge. Ideal candidates for this applications are those where the peak demand charge is high with primary energy low cost or waste heat is available. In many countries, the cost difference between electricity and natural gas is sufficient to justify absorption chillers. Additional cost savings can be realized through the use of heat recovery.

HYBRID REFRIGERATION SOLUTIONS

Hybrid systems, which use refrigeration compressors for base load, and the absorption chiller for peak load, are an attractive option in regions with high electric costs. Ammonia absorption chillers can be economically installed as a refrigeration only system, or as part of an integrated refrigeration plant and heating facility.
